City Upon a Hill: Massachusetts Bay Colony, 1634

This is the story of a people in flight
From fate commands himself, the Devil
With the teeth of England and the King's might
The weight of the souls of God shall travel.
Across the Sea is a cold white land
Where darkness may pass to boiled blood.
And the hearts of men lie still in the sand,
With famine and war as thick as mud.
But the Colony shall prevail in its glory!
With each rise and fall of our yellow sun
You brave souls will continue the story,
And may pass it along to your daughters and sons.
Massachusetts awaits with open arms
Prepare to invoke creativity and charm.

The Massachusetts Bay Colony will challenge delegates to approach the New World and all its novelties with exceptional creativity. Lack of resources, questionable allies, the Dutch (those damn Dutch), and of course witches, will all contribute to the hardships the settlers will face in an all but hospitable environment known as North America. But can the colonists and their differences stand proudly behind his majesty's banners, or will internal conflict and religious woes tear the fledgling project apart?

Committee Interview

Chair - Michael Millman

Michael Millman is a third year majoring in Economics, with a minor in Computer Science. After chairing Boris Yeltsin's Last Drink last year (the best ChoMUN committee in history), he is preparing once again to take ChoMUN by storm with his good friends Sam Maidman and Josh Engleman.

Michael has always had a love for New England. Who wouldn't like the lobster rolls, clam chowda, and Boston charm? His decision to chair the Massachusetts Bay Colony was partially inspired by this childhood love, as well as the pilgrim hat symbol of the Mass. Pike. Leave it to Massachusetts to make a pilgrim hat its highway symbol.

Michael is excited to see the delegates that ChoMUN will bring to Chicago this year, especially as he is now one of the Vice Presidents of the traveling team. When not meeting background guide deadlines or booking flights to conference, Michael enjoys making weather forecasts, eating delicious Thai food, and spending time with his brothers at AEPi (cue Sam and Josh).

Crisis Director - Samuel Maidman

Samuel Maidman is a third year majoring in Biological Sciences, originally from West Hartford, CT. He is a history buff, with a particular interest in the American Revolution. While Sam has been passionate about history ever since he was a child, his interest in international politics was sparked after spending a summer living with a host family in Madrid, Spain. When he is not stressing over pre-med requirements or deadlines for ChoMUN, he is running around campus playing water polo, hanging out at Alpha Epsilon Pi, and researching in a bio lab. He also plays tenor saxophone in the UChicago Jazz X-tet and is a huge jazz aficionado (with over 1000 recordings in his iTunes library). Last year, he served as the Crisis Director of Boris Yeltsin’s Last Drink and is ecstatic to reprise this role again. With Michael and Josh at his side, Sam is excited to embark on yet another adventure that is City Upon a Hill.

Crisis Director - Joshua Engelman

Joshua Engelman is a second year in the College majoring in Mathematics and Economics. Originally from Los Angeles, California, he has still not quite resolved his inner struggle over hockey loyalties. After staffing Boris Yeltsin's Last Drink with Sam and Mike at ChoMUN XVII, he somehow found himself talked into working with them again, this time as an executive. When not arguing with Sam and Mike about ChoMUN, he argues with them during training for the Travel Team and at AEPi. In the few moments when he shuts up about MUN, he can be found loudly regretting his choice of majors in Crerar Library.
